Google, Facebook and Twitter threaten to shut down services in Pakistan
Islamabad: Google, Facebook and Twitter have threatened to shut down service in Pakistan. In a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan, it had been informed that 70 million users would be suffering from the shutdown of the service, on which the govt decided to stop the implementation of the new rules. According to media reports, a letter has been sent to the Prime Minister regarding social media regulation of the Asian Internet Coalition Group, in which the government has informed Pakistan that it is difficult for the AIC to follow the new social media rules in Pakistan.
The text of the letter added that these laws will also affect consumers and business people. The closure of Google, Facebook and Twitter will affect 70 million users.
It is reported that after the letter, the federal government has decided to stop the implementation of the new social media laws. The government has set up a committee to review new social media laws and consult with stakeholders.
The chairman of the committee will be PTA Major General Retired Aamir Azim Bajwa. The committee also includes Digital Pakistan's head Tania Eros, social media focal person Dr Arsalan, Additional Secretary Ministry of IT. A committee set up by the federal government will consult with all stakeholders. The consultation process will also include the ministers of human rights, Shirin Mazari and Barrister Ali Zafar.
Sources say that the committee will prepare the final report in two months and submit it to the Prime Minister. The IT authorities have also confirmed that a committee has been constituted to review the new social media rules. The 4-member committee will review the new social media implementation.
